The Year Without a Summer

Dass der Himmel blau ist, ist gelogen In seinem künstlerischen Schaffen beschäftigt sich Matthias Kessler (geb. 1968 in Kempten lebt und arbeitet in New York) mit Naturphänomenen. Für sein jüngstes Projekt Light Phenomena wählte er den Himmel als Sujet: In den Arbeiten verfremdet Kessler Ikonen der Malerei von J.M.W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich und anderen. Ausgangspunkt dazu waren fotografische Reproduktionen beziehungsweise digitale Prints der Meisterwerke, die mittels Airbrush-Technik zu neuen abstrakten Kompositionen wurden. It Is a Lie That the Sky Is Blue Matthias Kessler's (b. Kempten, 1968 lives and works in New York) artist practice is dedicated to the manifold faces of nature. For his most recent project, Light Phenomena, he turned his attention to the sky: the resulting works defamiliarize icons of painting by J.M.W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, and others. Kessler appropriated photographic reproductions or digital prints of the masterworks, using his airbrush to transform them into novel abstract compositions. Kessler creates an experience of color that is beautiful and shocking at once, engaging with natural phenomena that artists and writers recorded with a mixture of excitement and fear such as the eruption of the volcano Tambora in Indonesia in 1816, which affected the global climate and changed the appearance of the sun throughout the following year. The Year Without a Summer gathers Kessler's explorations of art history and lays out the genesis of the natural disaster's reflections in visual culture.
